Mantastic

There are times, while writing, that I literally bang my head against the wall for want of an idea that is good enough, sharp enough, incisive enough to make it on the air as a network series. And I've finally figured out what my problem is: I was born at the wrong time. See, if I was born 20 years earlier, I could've sold a show like this:

Beautiful crap like this just doesn't have a place on modern television. And that's a damned shame.

and "beautiful crap" didn't have a place back then either - it only ran for three episodes.

What I love doing is rebooting old, tired concepts like this into something that bears scrutiny by today's audiences:

What is HEROES if not a rebooted TOMORROW PEOPLE?

What is JERICHO if not a rebooted SURVIVORS?

What is AQUAMAN if not a rebooted MAN FROM ATLANTIS mixed with POWERS OF MATTHEW STARR?

did it really only go for three episodes? For some reason, I remember, like, seasons of this show. And Simon Macorkindale turning into, like 5 or 6 different animals...

You know what I wanna see? A rebooted AUTOMAN.

That would be AWESOME.

Yep MANIMAL was Brandon Tartikoff's millstone for quite awhile. SNL even did a sketch about it. They made about 9 episodes but only showed three.

How about a rebooted KNIGHTHAWK or HIGHWAYMAN?

GEMINI MAN?

damn...

know what I want? A rebooted GALAXY RANGERS.

Seriously. For a mid-80s animated series, it was pretty bad-ass.

Okay... I played this once over on Bill's blog with Greatest American Hero... but as long as we're on Manimal, we have to remake Misfits of Science!

Except, of course, in the new version they were created by the same secret government lab and break out... always on the run from town to town, helping others when they can and melting away just ahead of the authorities...

... wait, I think I just remade The Hulk by accident...

Yay! Gemini Man!

I'd forgotten about that.

What was the one with the man who got struck by lightning and gained power over electricity instead of dying because his mum had been irradiated when she was pregnant with him then?

May only have been a TVM/pilot - can't recall for certain.
